This exhibition, curated by Rose Issa, introduces six contemporary artists from the Arab world who explore their cultural heritage with warmth, humour and poetry. Film, photography, painting and stencil will all feature in this eclectic and thought provoking show.
Artists involved: Basel Abbas, Ruanne Abou-Rahme, Chant Avedissian, Ayman Baalbaki, Fathi Hassan and Raeda Saadeh.

A Thousand Newspapers

Presented by the Cornerhouse & Routes into Languages North West
Created by 13-16 year olds from Kassim Darwish Grammar School for Boys in Manchester, this animated film creatively uses Arabic to comment on traditional clothing and family heritage. This film was produced as a result of an Arabic Creative Workshop at the Cornerhouse.

Born in Constantinople but educated in France, Hamdi Bey assumed the popular Oriental style of his teachers. Inspired by his painting ‘A Young Emir Studying’, this talk explores the effect that these cultural influences had on the artist and his work.

Liverpool Arabic Arts Festival: the story so far

This year, the festival won the prestigious Arab British Culture & Society Award 2010 from the Arab British Centre in London. This was in recognition of its outstanding contribution since 2002 to the British public’s knowledge and understanding of the life, society and culture of Arab people. The festival’s origins go back as far as 1998, and this display of photographs and promotional material traces the development of the festival. These indicate the breadth of activity at the festival, which is now an important fixture in Liverpool’s annual cultural calendar, and the only event of its kind in the UK.
